Minimize Damage
As soon as you notice a leak or roof damage, act quickly to prevent further harm. Use a heavy-duty tarp, plastic sheeting, or roofing tape to cover the damaged area and stop water from entering. Inside your home, move furniture and valuables away from the affected area to prevent water damage. If water is dripping, place buckets or containers to catch it and reduce the risk of water pooling and structural damage to the wood sheeting and framing itself. |
Identify Leak
If it is safe to do so, inspect the roof from the ground or use a ladder with caution to locate the source of the damage. Look for missing shingles, broken flashing, or areas where water is entering your home. If water is pooling in your attic, carefully poke a small hole in the ceiling to allow controlled drainage rather than letting the ceiling collapse. Take photos of the damage for insurance purposes and to provide useful information to a professional roofer. |
Professional
Contact a licensed roofing contractor as soon as possible to assess the damage and perform proper repairs. Avoid attempting complex fixes yourself, especially if there is extensive structural damage, as improper repairs could make the situation worse. If the damage is storm-related, check with your homeowner’s insurance provider to see if repairs are covered. Keep records of any emergency steps you took and any repair estimates to ensure a smooth insurance claims process. |
